Rahul Gandhi Accuses BJP Government of Failing Farmers, Raises Questions on MSP Policy

New Delhi, March 14

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday alleged that the BJP-led government has failed to fulfill its promises made to farmers and is prepared to sacrifice India’s agriculture for its own interests.

In a Facebook post, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha shared a question he had recently raised in the House regarding the announcement of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops and whether a potential trade agreement with the United States would alter the current MSP policy of the government led by Narendra Modi.

“In the Lok Sabha, I directly asked the government why the promise made to farmers in 2021 of a legal MSP—calculated at 32+50 percent—has not yet been implemented,” Gandhi said. He added that instead of giving a direct answer, the government merely repeated its existing MSP policy.

In his post written in Hindi, Gandhi also claimed that the government admitted it had pressured states to discontinue MSP bonuses, a step he said was justified by the Centre in the name of “national priorities” without any rational basis.

He further raised another important question about whether the trade agreement with the United States seeks to reduce “non-trade barriers.” Gandhi asked whether this indicates an intention to weaken the MSP mechanism and government procurement.

“The government is also avoiding this question,” he claimed.

Accusing the Modi government, Gandhi said, “The government is not only refusing to honour the promises made to farmers but is also ready to sacrifice Indian agriculture for its own interests.”

The Congress leader emphasized that his party would continue to raise its voice both inside and outside Parliament to protect farmers’ rights and safeguard the MSP system.
