Rahul Gandhi to Appear in Bhiwandi Court Today in RSS-Linked Defamation Case

New Delhi, February 21

Congress Member of Parliament and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is scheduled to appear today before a magistrate’s court in Bhiwandi, Thane district, in connection with a defamation case related to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

An RSS worker, Rajesh Kunte, had filed a complaint against Gandhi over certain statements he allegedly made during the 2014 Lok Sabha election campaign. According to the complaint, Gandhi stated at a rally in Sonale village that the RSS was behind the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Kunte has claimed that the remark damaged the image of the RSS and has filed the complaint under Section 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Gandhi’s lawyer, Narayan Iyer, informed the court that a new surety was required as senior Congress leader Shivraj Patil Chakurkar, who was his previous surety, passed away on December 12.

The hearing was earlier scheduled for December 20, 2025, but was adjourned to January 17 due to the requirement of a new surety. On January 17, the magistrate further deferred the matter to February 21 for hearing.
