New Delhi, February 24
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has said that the arrest of Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib reflects the government’s authoritarian tendencies and cowardice.
In a post on his social media handle, Gandhi wrote that peaceful protest is part of India’s historical legacy. “It is in our blood and is the democratic right of every Indian,” he said. He added that he was proud of his fellow Youth Congress members who fearlessly raised their voice in the national interest.
Gandhi alleged that the trade agreement with the United States compromises the country’s interests. He claimed that the agreement would harm India’s farmers and textile industry and hand over the nation’s data to the United States.
The matter relates to a shirtless protest staged by workers of the Indian Youth Congress during the India AI Impact Summit held at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital. The Delhi Police has arrested eight people, including Uday Bhanu Chib, in connection with the incident.
