Punjab and Haryana High Court Clarifies No Immediate Ban on Meat Sale in Sri Anandpur Sahib

Chandigarh, March 2

Amid confusion over the proposed ban on the sale of meat and meat products in Sri Anandpur Sahib after it was declared a religious city, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued an important clarification. The court stated that until a separate formal notification is issued by the competent authority to enforce the ban, no restriction on the sale of meat can be considered in effect, and traders are free to continue their lawful business.

The order came in response to a petition filed by small traders engaged in the sale of meat and meat products in Sri Anandpur Sahib. The petitioners had challenged the Punjab Government’s notification dated December 15, 2025, which declared Amritsar, Sri Anandpur Sahib, and Talwandi Sabo as “holy cities” and proposed a ban on the sale of liquor and meat in these areas.

The High Court’s clarification has brought temporary relief to traders, stating that in the absence of a specific enforcement notification, no ban is currently operative.
