Majithia Demands Apology from CM Bhagwant Mann Over Remarks on Punjab Women, Warns of Approaching NCW

Chandigarh, March 11

Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Ganieve Kaur Majithia on Tuesday said that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann should immediately apologise for his alleged objectionable remarks about the women of Punjab, failing which she would approach the National Commission for Women (NCW) seeking action in the matter.

Speaking to reporters, Majithia said the Chief Minister should apologise for the comments he allegedly made about women during a speech in Ludhiana. She added that if Mann tenders an apology, the matter could end there; otherwise, she would take the issue to the National Commission for Women.

She also expressed concern over the alleged use of force during the Anganwadi workers’ protests. Majithia claimed that women protesters were beaten with batons and their dupattas were pulled, calling it an attack on the dignity of women.

She further said that a case of an alleged fake encounter, in which a mother’s only son was killed, would also be raised before the Commission.

Responding to a question about the statement made by Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira in the Punjab Assembly, Majithia said she neither supported nor opposed the remark but believed he should have been given an opportunity to speak in the House.

“I am not in favour of that statement, but he should definitely have been given a chance to speak,” she said, adding that every person must be heard before reaching any conclusion.

Majithia also criticised the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), alleging that valuable time of the Punjab Assembly was being wasted on minor issues. She said the Assembly should focus on people’s issues instead of personal disputes.

She further said that if the ruling party was genuinely concerned about the dignity of women, it should have supported the proposal brought by the Congress demanding action against the Chief Minister’s remarks.

Majithia added that such remarks against women are wrong, regardless of who makes them. She said that the women of Punjab have always given birth to brave sons and have always been respected in society, and the government should not adopt double standards in this matter.
