New Delhi, January 8 - Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Thursday directed a forensic examination of a video allegedly showing disrespect towards Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and referred the matter to the Privileges Committee. The winter session of the Delhi Assembly remained disrupted for the second consecutive day after BJP MLAs created an uproar in the well of the House, demanding action against Leader of Opposition Atishi.
AAP legislators also staged protests, raised slogans, and waved posters in response. BJP MLAs accused Atishi of “insulting” the Sikh Guru during a discussion held last Tuesday on a special debate related to an event organised by the Delhi government in November last year to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.
Speaker Vijender Gupta stated that members from both the ruling party and the opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had demanded a forensic probe into the video clip. He directed that the forensic report be submitted within 15 days. According to a statement issued by the Delhi Assembly Secretariat, “The matter related to the alleged remarks made by the Leader of Opposition about Sikh Gurus has been referred by Speaker Vijender Gupta to the Privileges Committee for investigation and report.”
Amid continuous protests, the Speaker adjourned the House for the entire day on Thursday.
Earlier, Atishi rejected the allegations against her, stating that she was speaking about the BJP’s attempt to evade discussion on pollution and the issue of stray dogs in the Assembly. Referring to a video shared by BJP leaders, she alleged that the BJP had deliberately added an incorrect subtitle and inserted the name of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji into it.
