New Delhi, March 9
The second phase of Parliament’s Budget Session begins today and is expected to be quite stormy. A discussion is likely to take place today on the opposition’s motion seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
The opposition is also expected to raise several issues, including the government’s stand on Iran amid the US–Israel and Iran tensions, the exemption granted by the United States on India’s purchase of oil from Russia, and the results of the SIR in West Bengal.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will make a statement on the US–Israel and Iran conflict at 11 a.m. in the Rajya Sabha and at 12 noon in the Lok Sabha.
A discussion is also likely on the opposition’s motion to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla from his post. On February 10, as many as 118 opposition MPs, including members of the Congress, submitted a signed notice to the Lok Sabha Secretariat alleging that the Speaker had failed to maintain neutrality in the functioning of the House and had not provided the opposition with adequate opportunity to present its views.
