Dubai, March 31
US President Donald Trump and Iranian officials issued contradictory statements on Tuesday regarding talks aimed at ending the Middle East conflict. Meanwhile, intensified fighting in southern Lebanon has claimed the lives of both United Nations peacekeepers and Israeli soldiers.
Israel is attempting to push back Hezbollah militants, who have launched rockets and drones across the border, from southern Lebanon. The United Nations Security Council is set to discuss the situation after three UN peacekeepers were killed in southern Lebanon within less than 24 hours, although it remains unclear who was responsible.
Israel said on Tuesday morning that four more of its soldiers were killed in the attack.
Trump stated in an interview with the New York Post published on Monday that the US is in talks with Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. However, the former Revolutionary Guard commander denied that Iran is holding talks with the US and claimed that any negotiations facilitated by Pakistan were merely a cover for the deployment of American forces.
