Narendra Modi Inaugurates Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu in Guwahati, Boosting Connectivity in Northeast

Guwahati (Assam), February 14

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a roadshow in Guwahati. Following this, he inaugurated the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, built across the Brahmaputra River, connecting Guwahati with North Guwahati.

Constructed at a cost of approximately ₹3,030 crore, the six-lane extradosed prestressed concrete (PSC) bridge links Guwahati with North Guwahati and is the first extradosed bridge in Northeast India. The project is expected to reduce travel time between Guwahati and North Guwahati by up to seven minutes.

Keeping in view the region’s high seismic vulnerability, the bridge incorporates base isolation technology using friction pendulum bearings. High-performance stay cables have been used to ensure durability and long-term structural performance.

A Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS) has also been installed for real-time structural monitoring, early detection of damage, and enhanced safety and service life of the extradosed bridge.
