New Delhi, February 18
The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for elections to 37 vacant seats in the Rajya Sabha across 10 states. The elections will be held on March 16.
Polling will take place for seats from Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Assam, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Bihar. These seats are falling vacant on different dates in April.
It is noteworthy that the Rajya Sabha has a six-year term, with one-third of its members retiring every two years. The Rajya Sabha is also known as the permanent House, as it is never dissolved, unlike the Lok Sabha.
According to the schedule, nominations can be filed until March 5. The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on March 6, while the last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 9. Voting will be conducted on March 16, and the counting of votes will also be held on the same day. The entire election process is expected to be completed by March 20, as per the Election Commission.
